This online expert workshop was part of the
EPC’s project organised in cooperation with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung which
addressed the lessons of past industrial and energy transitions, including the
challenges and possibilities such transitions pose for workers in the
frontline. The workshop explored the role of governance and the involvement of
stakeholders (workers, companies) to achieve a fair transition. It started by
exploring the lessons of past transitions, followed by contributions on the
current transition. Panelists dedicated a particular focus to regions where
industries (such as coal production and car manufacturing) have been
drastically changed or replaced by other industries. Furthermore, participants
stressed the crucial role of labour unions for shaping a transition on the
regional level as well as the need to strengthen efforts in bringing various
stakeholders together when designing transitional policies on the local,
national and European level.
