Twenty years after the the European Council adopted the Tampere conclusions and the political launch of the EU's new policy on migration and asylum in October 1999, this high-level conference organised by the European Migration Network Finland, the Odysseus Academic Network and the European Policy Centre (EPC) in Helsinki in connection with the Finnish EU Presidency, took stock of the achievements to date, and looked ahead to the future of Europe’s migration and asylum policies in the context of the EU Strategic Agenda and the next five-year programme for the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (2020–2024).
Among the high-level speakers were Antonio Vitorino, Director General of the International Organizaiton for Migration, Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Nina Gregori Executive Director of the European Asylum Support Office, and Michael Spindelegger, Director General of the International Centre for Migration Policy Development. The conference was opened by Maria Ohisalo, Minister of the Interior for Finland. Paavo Lipponen, former Prime Minister of Finland, chaired the opening plenary session.
Over the two days, stakeholders and policy makers from all over Europe and beyond took part in a series of workshops introduced by top specialists in their field to bring their diverse points of view to the table. The results of the conference will be shared widely, including with the EU institutions and Member States.
